Equity in Gifted Education: International cooperation of education and research
Bureau Talent has started a new Erasmus+ project Equity in Gifted Education (EGE) with VOHaaglanden in The Hague (the Netherlands), Thomas More University of Applied Sciences in Antwerp (Belgium), Dublin City University (Ireland), and Heimerer College in Pristina (Kosovo). The kick-off was on November 30st 2023 when the partners met live for the first time. The project will run for three years, up until the autumn of 2026.
High cognitive abilities are often not recognised in students from families with a low socioeconomic status and/or with a migration background. The partners in this project want to contribute to change by making the identification and services for gifted students more equitable and accessible. By offering an academic language programme and developing a parent participation programme, they want to improve the opportunities for these students to be successful at developing their cognitive talent.
The project Equity in Gifted Education focusses on three themes:
- Identifying Cognitive Talent
- Academic Language
- Parent Participation
Bureau Talent’s main responsibility in the project is leading the work package on Academic Language. Of course, we also participate in the other work packages. In our former Erasmus+ project Creating Equal Opportunities at School we developed and tested a Dutch academic language programme. After the project, the lessons were further developed in cooperation with a publisher. In the current project we will further investigate the impact of the programme and we will translate and adapt the programme into English and Kosovars. At the same time we will develop a teacher training programme to make sure that teachers are well informed and inspired to do the language programme with their students.
